ray carpenter | shoemaker 54 years

In the mid-sixties there were over 30 shoe factories in Norwich, many in the centre of the city. With over 15% of the local workforce employed in the industry it wasn’t uncommon for school leavers to ‘apply within’.
With no idea of what he wanted to do this is exactly what Ray did.

They were good but hard times. Piece work meant he was quickly earning more than his father, a skilled welder. A skilled craftsman in his own right today Ray is dedicated to making quality shoes, so much so if he can work it better by hand then that’s the way it is. 54 years practice has seen big changes but the art of shoemaking remains much the same. At least it does here in Norwich.
